A trunnion-mounted ball valve is mainly used in the pipeline for on-off applications.
It is one kind of quarter-turn valve, it’s open when the ball’s hole is in line with the flow inlet and closed when it is 90 degrees rotated by the valve handle, blocking the flow. And normally can be lockable at a different position to control the fluid.

The ball is fixed by a stem and trunnion, and the seats are a spring-loaded assembly of seat retainer (Metal) and seat insert (Soft). Under low pressure the spring will force the seat to ball and when under high pressure, the fluid will push the seats to seal. Compared with floating valves, it has a wider size and pressure range, with lower operation torque which can save the actuator cost.
